Congolese Forces Liberate Key Areas in Masisi From M23 Rebels
Masisi, North Kivu — January 8, 2024: The Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) and local defense allies known as “Wazalendo” launched a counter-offensive on Tuesday that resulted in the liberation of critical areas in Masisi Territory, North Kivu.
This development comes just weeks after M23 fighters seized strategic parts of Masisi, including its administrative capital, prompting international condemnation and raising fears of a broader escalation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
However, in the latest turn of events, the FARDC-led coalition regained control of Ngungu following “intense fighting all day,” according to multiple local sources.
“The FARDC counter-offensive of January 7th allowed them to recover several localities formerly occupied by M23 rebels,” said FARDC spokesperson for North Kivu province, Guillaume Ndjike on Tuesday night.
“Significant losses on the enemy side, assessment to follow,” he added.
Munubo also underscored that with the Luanda peace process currently at an impasse, “only self-defense applies.”
The Luanda framework, which seeks to bring a diplomatic end to hostilities in eastern DRC, has seen limited progress in recent months, as M23’s advances and ongoing regional tensions continue to undermine ceasefire efforts.
Threats
While the liberation of Ngungu represents a significant morale boost for the Congolese army and local defense groups, Masisi’s capital remains under threat, and the FARDC has not officially confirmed the full scope of the victory on the ground.
Regional observers caution that sporadic clashes could persist, given the complex network of armed groups—including M23 and other factions—operating throughout North Kivu.
In the meantime, civilians caught in the conflict bear the brunt of disruptions to basic services and ongoing insecurity. Local authorities urge humanitarian organizations to increase aid to newly liberated areas, as many residents who fled during M23 occupation are now attempting to return home. (CHIMP REPORTS)
