FULLERTON, California (AP) — Two people were killed and 18 injured when a small plane crashed through the rooftop of a commercial building in southern California on Thursday afternoon, police said.

A small plane is reported to have crashed into a warehouse with ‘casualties’ reported.

Police received a report about the crash in the Orange County city of Fullerton at 2:09 p.m. local time. Firefighters and police responded to the scene, battling a blaze that erupted and evacuating surrounding businesses.

The incident is understood to have occurred in Fullerton, California, USA, not far from a nearby airport, with a reporter with KMBC reporting that 11 people had been injured.

Fire crews have rushed to the scene as dramatic images from showing a large hole in the roof of a what appeared to be a warehouse.

Helicopter teams were reporting on the incident, with journalist Chris Christi of ABC7 Eyewitness News posting on X: “A small plane has crashed into a commercial warehouse near Fullerton Airport, along Raymer Ave. There are reported casualties, firefighters battling a 4 alarm fire”.

Police said in a statement: “Plane crash in the 2300 block of Raymer Ave. The media staging area is the Southeast corner of Raymer Ave and Gilbert St. Unknown casualties. Evacuations are underway in the 2300 block of Raymer. Avoid the area. PD PIO en route.”

The incident is understood to have occoured at around 2pm. Images from the scene showed rescuers appearing to tend to casualties while other footage on social media seemingly taken from another light aircraft showed a tall smoke stack billowing up into a clear blue sky.

The incident comes off the back of what has been a harrowing few days in the US. On New Year’s eve, a vehicle ploughed into revellers in New Orleans with at least 15 people killed. In Las Vegas on Wednesday (January 1), a Tesla Cybertruck filled with firework mortars and camp fuel canisters blew up outside of Donald Trump’s Las Vegas International Hotel, killing one and injuring several more.

The cause of the crash is not known at the time of publication.
