Serbia deploys Chinese-made FK-3 air defense system
Serbia has unveiled its newly operational FK-3 air defense missile system.
The announcement by the Serbian Ministry of Defense highlighted the advanced capabilities of the FK-3 system, which was acquired from China.
“By arming the Air Force and Air Defence with the new FK-3 air defense missile system, the airspace control and protection system has been significantly improved in the Republic of Serbia,” the ministry stated. The system includes a command vehicle, rocket launchers, radars, and logistics vehicles, making it a versatile and comprehensive solution for air defense.
“The FK-3 has an exceptional anti-jamming system and the capability to prevent missiles designed to destroy tracking radars. It is characterized by exceptional maneuverability and spatial efficiency, making it dominant among new generation missile systems,” Captain Manić explained.
The FK-3 is capable of engaging six air targets simultaneously with up to 12 missiles, targeting aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and air-to-surface missiles traveling at speeds of up to 1,000 meters per second. The system can operate at altitudes up to 27 kilometers and ranges up to 100 kilometers, making it suitable for defending critical infrastructure and military assets.
The crews operating the FK-3 have undergone intensive training in China. Captain Manić noted that the training process was “very complex” but emphasized the dedication and motivation of the unit members.
“Despite the challenges, all unit members completed all forms of training to perform maintenance and use the missile system independently,” he said.
Daily training and performance evaluations are conducted to ensure the system’s readiness. This includes practicing defense scenarios to protect strategic facilities, Serbian Armed Forces (SAF) troops, and national territory from airborne threats.
The FK-3 system’s deployment is part of Serbia’s broader effort to modernize its military capabilities. The system not only enhances Serbia’s ability to safeguard its airspace but also signals a deepening defense relationship with China.
As Serbia navigates a complex geopolitical landscape, the acquisition of the FK-3 represents a significant step in bolstering its national security. The system is engaged in protecting government buildings, military installations, and critical infrastructure, ensuring the sovereignty of Serbia’s airspace.
