Oleksandr Usyk issues ‘blind’ response to complaints about Tyson Fury win.
The Ukrainian picked up his second win in a row against Tyson Fury on Saturday, but has hit out at one individual following concerns about the scorecards.
Oleksandr Usyk has hit out at boxing promoter Frank Warren after the latter slammed the scoring for the Ukrainian’s rematch with Tyson Fury.
The Ukrainian picked up his second win against the ‘Gypsy King’ on Saturday night with a convincing unanimous decision victory in Riyadh. While Fury was the aggressor early doors, Usyk was eventually able to let his hands go and landed a few good left hands over the top to stun his heavyweight rival in the middle rounds.
Towards the back end of the encounter, Usyk, 37, used his sensational speed and movement to tee off on Fury, whilst landing plenty of good shots to the body. In the end, all three judges were in agreement and scored the bout 116-112 in favour of the Ukrainian – who extends his unbeaten record to 23-0.
Fury’s promoter, Warren was left ‘dumbfounded’ by the scorecards, however, saying: “One judge gave Usyk the last seven rounds. “How on earth can anyone say he never won one round out of the last 7? I’m dumbfounded at the scoring.”
In the post-fight press conference, Usyk was quick to address Warren’s comments, labelling the 72-year-old as ‘blind.’ He said: “Uncle Frank, I think is blind. If Tyson says it is Christmas gift, okay thank you God, not Tyson. Thank you my coach, thank you my team. Listen, Frank is crazy, man, I think is my opinion. Okay, no problem. I win.”
As for Fury, the 36-year-old insists he did enough to win the contest, saying: “I thought I won that fight again. I thought I won both fights but going home with two losses on my record. Not much I can do about it, I can just fight my heart out and do the best I can. I’ll believe until the day I die that I won that fight. I was aggressive, on the front foot all night, landing body and head. I think he got a Christmas gift from the judges.”
The Brit also refused to comment whether or not he’ll fight again. “What’s next for me? I’m going home and having some time off,” he said. “You might do, you might not do. Who knows? We’ll talk about that next year.” When asked if his client will fight again, Warren said: “That’s up to him. It’s too early, it’s just after a fight emotions are running high. We’ll see. It’s nuts.”
While Fury hasn’t given too much away regarding his future, Eddie Hearn is insistent that the fight to make next is Fury vs Anthony Joshua. “There is only one fight for Tyson Fury and it’s Anthony Joshua. Fury is still potentially at the peak of his powers but just wasn’t up to it against Usyk,” he said. “I’d love to see Fury v AJ at Wembley and then maybe come back out here.”
