Russian military chief killed in Moscow explosion.

The head of Russia’s nuclear protection forces has been killed by a bomb in Moscow, Russian officials say.

Igor Kirillov and his assistant were both killed early on Tuesday by an explosive device planted close to a residential block of flats in the Russian capital, the country’s investigative committee said.

Kirillov was sentenced in absentia by a Ukrainian court on Monday for the use of banned chemical weapons during Russia’s military operation in Ukraine that started in February 2022.

During the almost three-year operation, Russia has made small but steady territorial gains to the nearly one-fifth of Ukraine it already controls.
