Russia repositions forces amid Syrian rebel attack
Russian military forces in Syria are reportedly withdrawing hastily from areas under threat by advancing rebel forces.
This development marks a critical shift as Moscow repositions its assets deeper into still-controlled territories near its key bases at Hmeimim and Tartus.
Russian S-400 “Triumph” and Tor-M2 surface-to-air missile systems were observed relocating near the city of Masyaf, situated on the border between Hama province and the mountainous region of Tartus province. These systems were originally deployed in 2017 to shield the Hmeimim airbase from potential threats originating from the mountain range.
In addition to the relocation of air defense systems, several forward-operating airstrips have reportedly been consolidated into the Hmeimim base. Equipment and personnel stationed at these locations are also being shifted, reflecting an effort to secure strategic resources amid growing instability in the region.
Unofficial reports from Turkish diplomatic circles suggest that Moscow has received informal assurances from Ankara regarding the safety of its forces. These guarantees reportedly hinge on the rebels’ focus on toppling the Assad regime, rather than targeting Russian troops or facilities. While these assurances have not been officially confirmed, they may indicate an understanding between Russia and Turkey amid the evolving dynamics of the Syrian conflict.
