Russian Embassy in Damascus reminds citizens about options to leave Syria.
The Russian Embassy in Damascus has issued a reminder to Russian citizens about the “option to depart the country on commercial flights through functioning airports,” citing the “complex military-political situation in Syria.”
The embassy also provided a hotline number and confirmed that both embassy and consular services are operating as usual. No evacuation order for Russian citizens has been issued thus far.
Meanwhile, Jordan has closed its only border crossing with Syria, Reuters reported, citing the Jordanian Foreign Affairs Ministry. A source within the Syrian army told Reuters that armed groups had shelled the border and attacked Syrian military posts.
On November 29, rebels, led by the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, entered the center of Aleppo, Syria’s second-largest city. This marked the largest military escalation in the region since 2020, when a ceasefire agreement brokered by Russia and Turkey was reached between Assad’s forces and the opposition.
Reports from December 5 indicated that rebels had also entered the city of Hama, located about 80 miles southwest of Aleppo and Syria’s fifth-largest city by population. In the ongoing conflict, Russia supports Bashar al-Assad’s government forces, while Turkey backs the opposition.
