ISJ Appeals to World Leaders to Save Six PMOI Supporters on Death Row in Iran.
The International Committee in Search of Justice (ISJ), representing over 4,000 cross-party lawmakers, has written urgent letters to Hon. Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy; Volker Türk, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights; and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. The ISJ is calling for immediate intervention to halt the execution of six political prisoners in Iran, all sentenced to death on politically motivated charges.
The six prisoners—Abolhassan Montazer (65), Pouya Ghobadi (32), Vahid Bani-Amerian (32), Babak Alipour (33), Ali Akbar Daneshvarkar (57), and Mohammad Taghavi (58)—have been convicted of charges such as “membership in the PMOI/MEK” and “collusion against national security.” The ISJ condemned the sentences as baseless and highlighted that the individuals were subjected to months of interrogation and torture before being convicted by Judge Iman Afshari of Tehran’s Revolutionary Court.
The letters stress that the regime is using executions as a weapon to suppress growing dissent, noting a dramatic surge in executions since August 2024, with over 541 individuals, including 17 women, hanged under President Masoud Pezeshkian’s government. The ISJ described the judiciary’s actions as part of a broader strategy to stifle calls for democracy and human rights.
The ISJ urged the global community to take decisive action, demanding the immediate halt of the executions and the release of all political prisoners in Iran. “The UN has always stood as a beacon for human rights and democratic values, and at this critical moment, your leadership can help prevent a grave injustice and potentially save lives,” the ISJ wrote.
