Rebels capture rare Syrian armored vehicles
Syrian rebel fighters have captured several rare SAV armored vehicles from the Syrian Armed Forces in the rapid push north of Hama.
At least two of these rare armored vehicles have reportedly fallen into rebel hands as they continue to gain ground against regime forces, whose ranks include Syrian, Russian, and Iranian military personnel.
The captured vehicles are the SAV Armored Vehicle, a locally developed and produced model based on a conventional truck chassis. Despite its local origins, the design of the SAV closely resembles that of the Ukrainian-made “Varta” armored vehicle, creating some initial confusion among analysts and military observers regarding its origin.
The rapid advance by rebel forces has forced regime troops and their allies into retreat, leaving behind valuable military hardware. Video footage and images from the scene show rebel fighters surrounding the captured vehicles, which appear largely intact and in working condition.
The SAV vehicles were part of a broader array of military equipment that has been left behind as government forces face increasing pressure from rebel offensives. The rebel advance is part of a broader blitzkrieg-style campaign that has caught Assad regime forces and their allies off guard, raising questions about the level of coordination and morale within the ranks of the Syrian military.
Rebel groups, backed by Turkish forces, have made considerable territorial gains in the past few days, retaking several key locations. Their momentum has disrupted supply lines and forced rapid withdrawals by government forces across parts of northern Syria.
