Many People Feared Dead as Landslides Strike In Bulambuli and Sironko Districts
Eastern Uganda is facing a terrible crisis after a series of landslides and floods have caused significant loss of life and damage to homes. Two separate incidents have left communities in shock and mourning.
Hajjat Faheera Mpalanyi, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Bulambuli, has confirmed that over 30 individuals are trapped beneath the debris. Rescue teams are working hard to find survivors, but the situation is challenging due to the extent of the damage and difficult conditions.
In Kesenji Village in Zebibi Parish, Bukyabo Sub-county, Sironko District, has also suffered from severe floods and mudslides. Sadly, these events have resulted in the deaths of eight people.
The impact on local communities is devastating. Families have lost loved ones, homes, and their means of living in just a few hours. These disasters highlight how vulnerable these areas are to extreme weather and the urgent need for better disaster preparedness.
As rescue efforts continue, local authorities are asking for help from national government agencies and humanitarian organisations. The immediate focus is on searching for survivors, providing emergency shelter and supplies to those affected, and assessing the full extent of the damage.
These tragic events remind us of the increasing risk of climate-related disasters in the region. They emphasise the importance of having effective early warning systems and strong infrastructure to protect communities in the future.
Our thoughts are with all those affected during this difficult time. We will provide updates on the situation and relief efforts as more information becomes available.
