Toronto, Canada – On November 23, 2024, Ugandan gospel music legend and pastor, Judith Babirye, made an unforgettable mark on Canada’s music scene with her maiden concert, Maama Talina Duplicate Charity, at 237 Sackville Street. The event drew an overwhelmingly large crowd, becoming the largest Ugandan gospel event ever held in Canada. The concert celebrated mothers in healthcare – the unsung heroes who balance the demands of home life with the tireless care they provide in hospitals, nursing homes, group homes, and private residences.
This year’s concert paid a heartfelt tribute to these mothers, especially highlighting their sacrifices during the pandemic when they remained on the frontlines, enduring stress, mental health challenges, and underappreciation. The event aimed to provide these healthcare heroes with a moment of relaxation, appreciation, and healing through the power of music.
When Pastor Judith Babirye stepped onto the stage, she captivated the audience with her elegance, beauty, and the angelic power of her voice. Her performance was electrifying, delivering a mix of timeless classics and newer hits that resonated deeply with the audience. Among the songs she performed were crowd favorites like Yesu Beera Nange, Canada Mpa Omukisa, Enjegere Zikutuka, Nwanira, Nzijukira, and Maama. A special highlight of the evening was her emotional rendition of the iconic song Sweet Mother, How Are You Today, which left many in the audience in tears.
Despite being away from Uganda for over five years, Judith Babirye proved once again why she remains the queen of Ugandan gospel music. Her powerful performance reminded everyone of her unparalleled ability to connect with audiences, transcending borders and generations. The concert featured an impressive lineup of supporting artists, including Sseku Martin, Joy Tendo, Patrick Mukisa Nkugwa, Olivia Praise, Ritah Mirembe, and Alice Kyasimire. Each brought their unique talents to the stage, but the standout moment came from Patrick Mukisa, whose deep baritone and orchestral tones left the crowd in awe. Many described his performance as angelic, and his collaboration with Judith Babirye during the worship session on Sunday 24th November was a musical highlight that moved the entire audience.
The success of the concert extended beyond to Sunday 24th November as Pastor Judith Babirye led a powerful worship service at her church; Victory Family International Church, 1160 Birchmount Road, Birchmount and Crouse Road, Ontario, Canada, M1P 2B8, and was ordained and consecrated as the Senior Pastor by Bishop Samuel Kasozi from Victory Family International Church, Boston, USA. Together with Patrick Mukisa, they ushered in a new dawn of worship, blending Ugandan gospel traditions with the Canadian faith community, and the soud of their voices can only be termed as soothing, angelic, anointed and healing.
The Maama Talina Duplicate Charity Concert is set to become an annual tradition, providing an opportunity to celebrate and appreciate mothers in healthcare while offering them a space to de-stress and be uplifted. Pastor Judith Babirye’s inaugural event was not only a celebration of music but also a testament to the power of gratitude, healing, and faith.
As one attendee put it, “This concert was more than music – it was a spiritual experience. Judith Babirye has reminded us why she is an icon, and her message of love and appreciation for mothers will resonate for years to come.” With such a resounding success, Pastor Judith Babirye’s arrival on the Canadian gospel scene has undoubtedly ushered in a new era of worship and celebration for Ugandans and gospel music lovers worldwide.
