The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) women’s marathon team brought pride to Uganda at the 2nd Africa Military Games, currently underway in Abuja, Nigeria.
Private Cheptoyek Ruth clinched a bronze medal, while team captain Sergeant Chebet Emily secured a silver medal in the 42km marathon. The gold medal was taken by a Tanzanian athlete.
This outstanding performance has sparked celebrations within the UPDF camp, further solidifying Uganda’s presence on the international stage.
Brigadier General Richard Karemire, the Joint Staff Officer for Formal Education, Sports, and Culture, and the head of the UPDF delegation, expressed pride in the team’s achievements. Speaking to the media, he stated:
“This is a remarkable accomplishment for Uganda. Our women have shown resilience and determination. We look forward to building on this success in other track and field events.”

Team captain Sgt Chebet Emily, overwhelmed with joy, reflected on her silver medal performance:
“It feels incredible to win this medal for Uganda. This achievement is not just for me but for my team and the UPDF. It’s proof that with hard work and dedication, we can compete at the highest level.”
Coach Okiror Daniel lauded the women’s marathon team for their exceptional display of endurance and determination. He acknowledged the tough competition but highlighted their preparation as key to their success.
“Today’s performance is a testament to the hard work these ladies have put in. We are proud of the medals, but the focus now shifts to other track and field events where we hope to secure more wins for Uganda.”
The Africa Military Games, which returned after a 22-year hiatus, kicked off on November 20, 2024, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Nigeria. The event features over 25 countries competing in 19 disciplines, including athletics, boxing, football, and volleyball.
Uganda’s delegation, under the leadership of Brig Gen Karemire, is determined to maintain its medal-winning momentum as the games continue until November 30, 2024.
