Score Predictions: Will Sunderland pick up another three points on the road?
Last Game Recap
The Lads totally controlled our 2-0 home win against Oxford without even getting out of second gear. Wilson scored another peach of a goal, too. Our own “Thierry regen” is getting better and better.
Today, the team and their usual sold-out away contingent travel to Loftus Rd to take on Queens Park Rangers, with every intent to retain or extend their safety buffer atop the second tier.
QPR haven’t won since August, and sit one off the bottom of the league. Let’s see how our RR writers think this one is going to go…
‘The Champion’ Martin Wanless predicts…
Score prediction: QPR 1 Sunderland 3
Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Browne
Another week, another game in which I am expecting us to win. It’s an unusual place to be, and it’ll come to an end sooner rather than later, so let’s ride this wave.
QPR will be up for this, and despite their league position will be a threat but hopefully, we’ll be able to turn in a strong showing and come away with all three points. For QPR this season, our former loanee Jake Clarke Salter is key – who’d have thought that based on his performances for us?! – and if he’s in the team Isidor may have a tricky afternoon but he’s got the quality to take advantage of a shaky defence.
Malc Dugdale predicts…
Score prediction: QPR 0 Sunderland 3
Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Jobe
After a parade of a procession at home last weekend against newly promoted Oxford, we simply have to hope for a win away at struggling QPR.
This could go either way as can any game – if we score early then we could go on to win by four or more, but we may struggle to break down the home side who will no doubt park the bus for the league-topping visitors, so it may be a very strong second half which may see us prevail.
I fancied Rigg to open our account again but with Jobe in the form he is I’ve gone for him. The fact that any of Mundle, Isidor, Rigg, Jobe, Roberts and Mayenda are now back, picking the goal scorer is getting harder, but Bellingham is increasingly showing his class and while the defence focuses on Wilson I can see him nipping in.
Jack Howe-Gingell predicts…
Score prediction: QPR 0 Sunderland 2
Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Isidor
We just keep going from strength to strength. Two more amazing goals last week, and I’m hoping we can keep kicking on in this vein!
I’m expecting will have Moore between the sticks for another game, so it’ll be interesting if he is actually tested as Oxford offered nothing offensively, and I’d expect QPR at home to push more.
That said, they are languishing second bottom after more was expected under supposedly decent boss Martí Cifuentes. We have come unstuck in these games before, with Plymouth immediately springing to mind.
We must remain consistent and put QPR to the sword as we continue (what I hope) is a march to promotion!
Will Jones predicts…
Score prediction: QPR 1 Sunderland 2
Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Jobe
After the most comfortable and simple game we’ve played so far, back onto the road we go.
This should be a win, no doubt about it. You look back on a season for a side that goes for promotion, and they win these games.
However, looking at the fixtures over the past couple of weeks, this is the one I’ve been most wary of.
I believe we will win, however, I would not be surprised if we dropped points. We are away, this is the one they will want to get something from the most, and just made Burnley suffer.
If we score early I’ll be happy.
Matty Foster predicts…
Score prediction: QPR 0 Sunderland 1
Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Mundle
After a comfortable win against Oxford, we face another match that, on paper, we should be winning.
But with Sunderland, that usually presents the biggest obstacle.
QPR have only one win this season, and that came on the road.
I never anticipated them to struggle quite as much as they have, but they find themselves second-bottom, with only Pompy below them.
We’re in fantastic form, and morale will be sky-high.
I’ve got to back a win here, albeit I think it will be tough to break them down.
Bomber Davies predicts…
Score prediction: QPR 1 Sunderland 2
Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Mundle
On paper this is an easy banker. Make no bones about it, QPR suck.
Zero wins from their six home matches, and just 3/24 points gained suggests a comfortable win for the lads and potentially by a wide margin.
However, firstly… we are Sunderland and can’t do things easy… and secondly we are top of the league and everyone’s cup final currently.
They’ll be clinging onto the fact they kept Burnley to a 0-0 at Turf more, but the home fans will be expecting more this weekend, which will likely play into our hands.
I don’t think it will be as easy as the two league positions suggest, but I fully back the Le Bris Bus to keep rolling on!
Gary Winter predicts…
Score prediction: QPR 0 Sunderland 2
Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Isidor
We didn’t face any trouble against Oxford, who sat back and allowed us plenty of time and space. And because of that, we looked very, very good. One can only hope we have more matches that play out like that, but it’s not something we are used to.
QPR finished last season so strongly, I was expecting them to be comfortable in mid-table as a minimum, and possibly in the mix for a playoff spot, but the honeymoon period appears to be over for Marti Cifuentes. They grafted out a good point away at Burnley in their last match, where the focus seemed to shift back to basics – being hard to break down to help stop the free fall.
Second from bottom and winless at home, it almost feels inevitable which way the result will go on Saturday afternoon. We may see more resolute defending this weekend from QPR, but as they are at home I expect them to have to come out a bit. So I think we will be able to pick them off a couple of times with our pace. Their right back is on loan from the Mags, so I expect Mundle to give him hell. Alternatively, Jimmy Dunne may start there – see previous point.
Brett Lyons-Davis predicts…
Score prediction: QPR 0 Sunderland 2
Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Isidor
Sunderland playing against a team in the bottom 3 + my presence in the away end normally equals a Sunderland defeat. However I thankfully got that monkey off my back at Luton last week. Which may have given me to much confidence in predicting a 5-0 over Oxford.
After 3 games in 6 days, a midweek break will be welcome for the lads who will be chomping at the bit to get going again. We will be too strong for the hoops who only have one win all season and I think the lads will be leaving London with a 0-2 win and Thierry Henry regen big Wilson grabbing the first.
Last game predictions
A confident set of predictions for the last game brought points for most.
Gary got a maximum of 4 points with his totally correct score and first scorer. Martin and Malc did well too, and the lack of any fence sitters brought in points top to bottom.
Latest standings
Last year’s champ Martin ascends to the top with a three point haul, and there are now only three points between top and 4th, but then a wee gap to the bottom 4.
Gary shoots up to mid-table after starting the season with no points for ages.
How the points are awarded
Just a quick reminder of how we allocate points to our match-by-match predictions:
- Correct score = Three points
- Correct outcome (but not correct score) = One point
- Correct first Sunderland goalscorer = One point (no goal scorer is a valid call)
- Possible deductions for being lazy and not submitting on time = Yellow Card warning, then a two point deduction.
