Liam Payne “jumped from the balcony” of his hotel room leading to his untimely death, police in Buenos Aires have said in a statement to the Associated Press, reported by the Mirror US that appears to rule out an accidental fall or foul play. The 31 year old singer died on Wednesday night after falling from the third floor of a hotel in the upscale neighbourhood of Palermo.
The singer, famous for his part in the One Direction music sensation formed on the 2010 series of X Factor was on a getaway in Argentina with girlfriend Kate Cassidy, attending a concert by his former bandmate Niall Horan. A preliminary autopsy report revealed that the star died from “multiple traumas” causing both “internal and external bleeding” after a 40-foot fall.
The police statement to The Associated Press said Payne “had jumped from the balcony of his room”. Officers rushed to the hotel in response to an emergency call just after 5pm local time warning of an “aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol,” the statement added.
Prior to the incident, the head of reception at Hotel Casa Sur made two urgent calls to 911, stating: “We have a guest who’s off his head on drugs and is destroying everything in his room. We need someone to come.”
The tragedy began to unfold as an employee made an urgent call after the line went silent, saying: “I don’t know if the guest’s life is in danger.” He went on, alarmingly, “The room has a balcony and we are afraid he might do something. Just send an ambulance, only an ambulance.”
Kate had left Liam Payne in Argentina and headed back to the US days before his tragic death. Kate explained to fans on TikTok: “Honestly, love South America but I hate staying in one place for too long. And we were supposed to be there for, like, five days, turned into two weeks. I was just like, ‘I need to go home.’” Liam chose not to go with her but Kate didn’t say why.
The probe into the artist’s passing is far from over, with toxicology results and a closer examination of Liam’s past medical records anticipated to shed light on possible substance abuse and his mental health status.
Alberto Crescenti, the head of Buenos Aires emergency services, has tragically revealed the immediate nature of Liam’s death due to severe and multiple injuries, noting a skull fracture among them. He said: “Our role was to head there quickly, give medical attention, and try to resuscitate him, but his injuries were incompatible with life. Based on what the team saw, there was apparently a cranial fracture and extremely serious injuries that led to his immediate death.”
