Administrations of six Kazakh cities – Almaty, Aktobe, Pavlodar, Petropavlovsk, Uralsk and Shymkent – refused activists to hold rallies against construction of a nuclear power plant, Vlast.kz reports as ActivistsNotExtremists monitoring group saying.

All protests were planned to be held on October 6 on the referendum day on construction of the nuclear power plant.

The activists have notified all municipalities for different time intervals in the named cities.

In Pavlodar and Almaty, the activists were refused due to “the previously agreed events”, in Uralsk and Shymkent – for “providing incomplete information”, in Petropavlovsk – due to “the lack of the regulation”, in Aktobe – due to “the current emergency situations regime of natural disasters of local scale since March 29”.

The human rights defenders of the ActivistsNotExtremists monitoring group recorded at least 662 refusals to hold peaceful marches and single protests (in 22 cities and settlements) from July 30, 2020 to October 1, 2024, the report says.

Earlier, the rally against nuclear power plant was denied by authorities of Ridder (a city in East Kazakhstan region). The application was submitted by activist Nazar Asaiynov.

In addition, there have been reports recently of the detention of activists, who oppose the construction of a nuclear power plant. The day before, community leaders reported about 12 detainees in Almaty, six of them were later released under travel restrictions.

There have been disputes on construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan for a long time. The final decision will be taken by a referendum scheduled for October 6 by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Last year, the Ministry of Energy of the country reported that the plant will appear on the territory of Ulken village, Jambyl district, Almaty region in case of a positive decision on its construction.
