Saab to build new munitions facility in Michigan

Swedish defense giant Saab has announced plans to open a new munitions facility in Grayling, Michigan, as part of its ongoing efforts to expand U.S. defense manufacturing capacity.

The facility, scheduled to break ground in the fourth quarter of 2024, will focus on the final assembly and integration of shoulder-fired munitions and precision fire systems, with production expected to begin in early 2026.

Erik Smith, President and CEO of Saab in the U.S., emphasized the urgency of the project in light of global security challenges. “Given current global security challenges, it is critical the United States strengthens its national defense capacity. Saab is proud to partner with the state of Michigan and the local community to establish a world-class facility that, with our range of products, will increase and modernize the domestic production of munition systems,” Smith said.

The new Grayling facility is part of Saab’s broader commitment to supporting U.S. national defense, while also investing in local communities. “We are making a long-term commitment not only to the U.S. defense industrial base, but to the local community as well. Saab plays a positive role in the communities where we live and work, creating jobs and investing in the local community, and we look forward to joining the Grayling community,” Smith added.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer lauded Saab’s decision to establish operations in Grayling, highlighting the economic and strategic benefits for the region. “Saab’s transformative investment in Grayling will create 70 jobs and contribute to Michigan’s proud legacy and leadership in the defense industry,” Whitmer said. “We built the arsenal of democracy to win WWII and will keep rolling up our sleeves to protect our national defense. Let’s get it done.”

The Grayling plant will be Saab’s 10th facility in the United States, further expanding the company’s footprint in the U.S. defense sector. Saab already operates advanced manufacturing facilities across the country, including locations in West Lafayette, Indiana, for aerospace manufacturing, and Syracuse, New York, for radar and sensor systems.

The new facility is expected to play a key role in Saab’s strategic efforts to meet the increasing demands for munitions and advanced defense systems. The investment also aligns with the U.S. government’s goal of strengthening domestic defense manufacturing in light of evolving global threats.
