The 76ers are continuing to trust the process.
Philadelphia and star center Joel Embiid have agreed to a three-year extension, the team announced Friday morning. The deal keeps the MVP in the City of Brotherly Love through the 2028-29 season.
“Philadelphia is home. I want to be here for the rest of my career,” Embiid said on Instagram. “I love this community and everything you’ve given me and my family. There is a lot more work to do. You guys deserve a championship and I think we’re just getting started!”
Embiid was named the league’s Most Valuable Player in 2023 and has been selected to five All-NBA Team honors, seven consecutive All-Star Games, and three All-Defensive Team nods. The 30-year-old also recently helped Team USA win a gold medal at the Olympics.
“Joel has cemented himself as one of the greatest Sixers of all time and is well on his way to being one of the best players to ever play the game,” Josh Harris, 76ers managing partner, said in a statement. “We’re ecstatic that this extension keeps him and his family in Philadelphia for years to come.
“Joel is a great family man, leader, and person. He is an elite two-way player with a combination of size, strength, and athleticism that this league has rarely – if ever – seen. He is integral to this franchise’s quest for another NBA Championship, and we are honored that he continues to choose this organization as his NBA home.”
Here is more to know about the contract.
Joel Embiid contract
Embiid’s contract extension is worth the maximum amount, coming in at three years for $192.9 million, ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reported. It carries a guaranteed amount of $299.5 million.
Embiid is declining his $59 million player option for the 2026-27 season and will sign the new, three-year extension. It keeps the center tied to Philadelphia through the 2028-29 season.
The 76ers star has two years remaining on his four-year, $213 million contract he previously signed with the team. He is set to make $51,415,938 during the 2024-25 season.
With the new extension, his career earnings total will reach $514.8 million. That is the fourth-highest total in NBA history behind LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Paul George, per ESPN.
