A city council meeting at City Hall today descended into chaos as council members clashed with the City Executive Committee over its failure to deliver a critical report on solid waste management. The much-anticipated session, intended to focus on pressing issues in Kampala, was thrown into disarray when the executive committee failed to present a strategy to address the city’s mounting waste crisis.

Frustration quickly escalated among council members, who were awaiting the report that was expected to outline a comprehensive plan to manage the increasing piles of garbage accumulating across the capital.

The city’s waste management problem has worsened in recent months, with many neighborhoods struggling with health and environmental risks posed by the growing mounds of uncollected rubbish.

Councilors used furniture to attack each other

Several council members openly expressed their outrage, accusing the executive committee of gross negligence. One councillor voiced his dismay, saying, “This is unacceptable! How can we have a crisis of this magnitude, and the committee can’t even present a simple report? The people of Kampala deserve better.” His sentiments were echoed by others, with another council member adding, “The city is drowning in waste, and we have no clear plan on how to manage it. We need urgent solutions, not delays.”

A fight broke out amongst the councilors which prompted police to intervene.

As punches flew, some of the representatives were seen using furniture to attack each other.

The inability to present the report, which had been expected to propose actionable solutions to Kampala’s waste crisis, intensified the frustration felt by many in attendance.

Some council members demanded immediate intervention to address the deteriorating situation, while others raised concerns about the executive’s failure to prioritize such a critical issue.

Kampala’s waste management problem has been escalating, with heaps of garbage left uncollected in several parts of the city. The lack of a cohesive plan has raised alarm, with residents facing serious health risks due to the unsanitary conditions. The growing waste crisis has also sparked environmental concerns, as the unmanaged garbage threatens local ecosystems and pollutes the city’s waterways.

Despite the heated exchanges, it remains unclear when the City Executive Committee will present the long-awaited report. For now, the residents of Kampala remain in limbo, awaiting decisive action from city leaders to clean up the streets and restore normalcy. Until a clear plan is unveiled, the waste crisis will continue to pose a significant challenge to the city’s health and well-being.
