World’s largest rodent missing from Midlands zoo as public warned ‘don’t approach’

A giant rodent has gone missing from a Midland zoo as the attraction asked for the public’s help to find it. A capybara named Cinnamon disappeared from Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World in Hadley, north of Telford.

The biggest rodent in the world, Cinnamon went missing from her habitat in Shropshire on Friday, September 14. She was believed to have entered woodlands within the zoo grounds but then on Saturday got beyond the zoo’s perimeter fence and was spotted on a nearby road.

Now Hoo Zoo is asking for people to help find her saying it had not had any further sightings of ‘our beloved Capybara, Cinnamon’ since Saturday evening. It said it has had teams ‘working around-the-clock to locate her’.

It said on Facebook: “It is likely that Cinnamon is in the vicinity of the zoo, The Humbers and surrounding fields where there is ample food and plenty of ponds.

“We have reported the escape to the council in line with the conditions of our zoo licence. If members of the public sight the animal they should call the zoo immediately on 01952 677 917 or 07908 726 240 if between the hours of 5pm and 9am. Please do not report sightings on Facebook as they may not be seen.”

It issued a warning to anyone who spotted Cinnamon, not to approach her. It said: “Under no circumstances should a member of the public try to capture the animal by themselves. Although Capybara are generally friendly and inquisitive animals, the animal should not be approached as it could become unpredictable if alarmed or cornered.

“Cinnamon has a fantastic bond with her keepers and it is likely she can be encouraged back to her habitat with no physical intervention. Please wish us all the very best for the safe and swift return of Cinnamon. We appreciate all your support in finding her.”
