Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is set to continue enhancing market infrastructure and expand trading spaces in a bid to improve the livelihoods of vendors across the city.
This was revealed by the KCCA Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka, during a meeting with leaders of the 16 KCCA-managed public markets at Kololo grounds on September 6, 2024.
Kisaka emphasized that KCCA has earmarked funds specifically to upgrade infrastructure in public markets, a move aimed at creating a conducive environment for traders.
“We are committed to improving the state of our markets to support economic activity, improve sanitation, and ensure better working conditions for all vendors,” Kisaka said.
The meeting, which was convened by Maj Emma Kutesa, the Presidential Assistant in Special Operations at State House, sought to address the pressing challenges facing market vendors in the city.
Some markets have already seen significant improvements. For instance, Bukoto, Kiswa, and Namuwongo markets have been equipped with modern sanitation facilities, including new toilets, while St Balikuddembe Market has been outfitted with solar lighting and newly paved floors to improve both security and hygiene.
Additionally, ongoing construction works at Kitintale Market in Nakawa Division and Kiseeka Market in Central Division are expected to be completed soon. In Rubaga Division, Busega Market is nearing completion, with the access roads and parking lot being finalized before its official opening.
Kisaka noted that creating and upgrading workspaces aligns with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government’s priority of ensuring city dwellers are fully engaged in the money economy and job creation.
This initiative will also help boost the income-generating capacity of vendors, contributing to the city’s economic development.
Susan Kushaba, the Vendor’s coordinator commended the ED and Maj. Kuteesa for meeting the vendors and committing to address their challenges.
The improvements in market infrastructure are expected to enhance the trading experience for thousands of vendors and shoppers across Kampala, further cementing KCCA’s commitment to supporting local businesses and improving urban livelihoods.
