The Uganda Police have announced that investigations are underway to clarify the events surrounding an incident involving Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, president of the National Unity Platform (NUP).
Reports indicate that Kyagulanyi was injured during a confrontation with police officers on September 3rd in Bulindo, Wakiso district, after attending a thanksgiving ceremony for lawyer George Musisi. Supporters of Kyagulanyi claim that he was shot by police, a statement that the police have firmly rejected. Kyagulanyi is currently receiving treatment at Nsambya Hospital.
In a statement released today, Police Spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma explained that after the function, Kyagulanyi and his team attempted to initiate a procession in Bulindo town. Police had advised him against this action, but he insisted on proceeding, which led to a blockage of the road.
Kituuma stated that police intervened to disperse the procession, and during the altercation, Kyagulanyi was injured while attempting to enter his vehicle. According to Kituuma, police have retrieved CCTV footage showing disruptions to traffic, as well as incidents of stoning directed at police officers, which resulted into injuring three officers and damaging two police vehicles. Investigations are ongoing to establish the precise circumstances of the incident.
In response to the police’s account, former FDC President Dr. Kizza Besigye condemned the police’s actions, describing them as a manifestation of unprovoked aggression against political opposition leaders. âIâve just caught up with what happened last evening in Bulindo, Kira. The horrible outcome of what, as usual, is totally uncalled for police aggression against political opposition leadersâ. We condemn the Uganda Police Force for its continued rampant abuse of human rights,” he stated.
