The battlefront in Ukraine is witnessing significant shifts, with Russia reportedly making substantial advances in the eastern regions, while Kyiv’s forces maintain their push into Kursk.

According to the Telegram channel Deep State, Russian troops are achieving notable progress around Pokrovsk in Donetsk oblast, as well as in areas like Niu-York, Avdiivka, and Staromykhailivka.

The channel has also reported that Ukrainian military command is attributing these setbacks to its own soldiers and specifically to the battalion commander of the 11th Motorized Infantry Battalion of the 59th Brigade, following the loss of Karlivka village. Despite these developments, Ukraine’s strategic incursion into the Russian region of Kursk continues, with President Volodymyr Zelensky’s forces holding on to numerous towns and villages.

John Hardie, deputy director of the Russia program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, shared insight into the military shift with Newsweek, saying: “Ukraine took a gamble in Kursk by committing its limited reserves to that operation and also pulling various units off the line, including some forces defending near Pokrovsk and Toretsk.”

He added, “That has given Russia a greater opportunity to make gains in those areas in the Donetsk oblast. It does put Ukraine in a tough position in the Donetsk oblast.”, reports the Express.

In a significant territorial push, Russian forces have captured 477 square kilometers (184 square miles) of Ukrainian land in August, marking Moscow’s largest territorial gain since October 2022.

Kurt Volker, ex-US ambassador to NATO, has highlighted Russia’s military strain, stating: “(Russia) can’t attack Ukraine and defend Russia at the same time, it has had to make a choice.”

He further elaborated: “It’s going to have to move forces from Ukraine to defend Russia. That movement is something we should be taking advantage of with long-range systems to hit them while they move.”
