A protest was staged in front of the Serbian state TV (RTS) headquarters in Belgrade as a show of support for environmental activists arrested for trying to overthrow the authorities by force.
Five activists of the Eko Straza (Eco Guard) and others from similar environmental organizations were arrested after the mass protest in the Serbian capital on August 10 on suspicion of attempting a “violent toppling of constitutional order”.
The protest, named Safety in Numbers, was addressed by several of the arrested activists including a woman who was 5 months pregnant. They recalled what happened to them and others, including a woman who was fired after giving birth to triplets, death threats, assaults, insults, targeting in pro-regime tabloids and the persistent failure of the police to react to reports.
The protesters lit up the RTS building with their phones after all the lights in it were put out. The RTS main evening news included a short live report in minute 20 of the half-hour news show.
