The representatives of the 857 villages of the city gathered at Kitante Primary School where messages on solid waste management were relayed by different speakers in the wake of the Kiteezi tragedy.
The engagement with the KCCA Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka was to communicate to the grassroots leaders how to efficiently manage waste at the household level. This is the second Smart City Ambassadors Forum this year.
Kisaka said the Smart City agenda will be realised when each person takes responsibility to sort garbage and effectively dispose of it. She decried the practice of pouring garbage in the drainages and littering, saying everyone should use the Smart litter bins on the streets. KCCA emphasised the 3Rs, Reuse, Reduce and Recycle.
The meeting which was addressed by the Division leaders of the village ambassadors, Director of Public Health recommended that this campaign should also be held at the division levels to interact with more people
Kisaka revealed that KCCA is going to establish an alternate landfill as an interim measure as they transition towards establishing a waste to energy plant. She said Kiteezi has served Kampala city and the neighbouring districts for 28years and will be retired and repurposed for alternative use.
