Romania is set to bolster its fleet of F-16 fighter jets with 186 AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles [AMRAAM]. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency [DSCA] announced this significant order on its website, outlining that Romania will also receive four AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM guidance sections and other essential equipment.
Developed by Raytheon, the AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM is a cutting-edge missile designed for air-to-air combat, providing high precision and reliability against enemy aircraft. Measuring about 12 feet [3.66 meters] in length and with a diameter of approximately 7 inches [0.18 meters], it is relatively lightweight, enhancing its maneuverability and effectiveness in various combat scenarios.
Equipped with a high-explosive fragmentation warhead, the AIM-120C-8 maximizes target damage by dispersing shrapnel upon detonation, significantly increasing the likelihood of a successful hit. One of its standout features is its impressive operational range, capable of engaging targets over 100 miles [160 kilometers] away, making it a formidable option for beyond-visual range [BVR] engagements.
There are multiple reasons the AIM-120C-8 is considered a cutting-edge, beyond-visual-range weapon. Its state-of-the-art radar guidance system ensures it can accurately track and strike targets at extended distances. On top of that, its robust propulsion system delivers the speed and range needed to quickly reach faraway targets.
Romania is taking a cue from countries like the Netherlands and Sweden. As a reminder, the Netherlands chose to purchase AIM-120C-8 missiles to bolster its air force’s capabilities, aiming to counter regional threats and enhance interoperability with NATO allies.
This kind of procurement highlights the trust European military forces place in the missile’s performance, even though we don’t get direct feedback from pilots. Similarly, Sweden’s decision to acquire these missiles underscores the need for modern air-to-air munitions that can effectively counter both current and future regional threats.

One notable instance where the AIM-120C-8 was utilized in real combat conditions took place during the Syrian Civil War. In 2017, U.S. fighter jets employed the AIM-120C-8 against Syrian aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles [UAVs] to enforce no-fly zones and protect coalition forces.
The AIM-120C-8 missile has seen significant use in various global conflicts, including the ongoing conflict in Yemen. Saudi Arabian and Emirati coalition forces have effectively deployed this missile to intercept hostile aircraft and missiles launched by Houthi rebels.
Additionally, the AIM-120C-8 has been a crucial component in numerous NATO skirmishes and engagements. During exercises and real-world intercepts in Eastern Europe, NATO aircraft have utilized this missile to deter and neutralize potential threats from adversarial forces.
