NATO’s Deployable Air Command and Control Centre [DACCC] recently relocated its Deployable Air Defense Radar [DADR] LANZA LTR-25 and support crew from Poggio Renatico, Italy, to Cataloi, Romania.
For the next several months, experts in air surveillance and control from NATO will be bolstering the Alliance’s enhanced Vigilance operations on the southeastern flank. The DACCC achieved the Initial Operational Capability of the DADR on August 14, a move designed to boost surveillance capabilities along Romania’s border, particularly for identifying assets with a reduced radar cross-section approaching NATO airspace.
This mobile radar is one of two allocated to the DACCC. In combination with two additional passive sensors [Deployable Passive ESM Tracker – DPET], they offer a unique capability. This setup makes the DACCC the only NATO entity to provide both active and passive radar detection.
“This deployment should be viewed as a defensive measure designed to bolster the protection of both our host nation and ally Romania,” stated Major General Denny Traas, DACCC Commander. “The mission underscores the ongoing evolution and enhancement of the Alliance’s defensive capabilities,” he added. “Our primary focus is to support NATO’s efforts in maintaining a robust and capable military posture that deters any attack on the alliance and stands ready to defend if deterrence fails,” he said.
Deployable active radars offer a powerful complement to existing static and airborne command and control platforms. They enhance interoperability among allies and partners and significantly boost the readiness of NATO Air and Space Power.
Brigadier General Michael Krah, Deputy Chief of Staff Operations at Allied Air Command, emphasized NATO’s dedication to protecting the airspace of its members. He highlighted the strategic significance of deploying the DACCC radar to Romania alongside the Spanish F-18s currently stationed at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base for enhanced Air Policing. These actions, he noted, reflect the strong unity and commitment among NATO Allies in maintaining defense and deterrence.
The LANZA LTR-25 radar is a state-of-the-art radar system designed for advanced detection, tracking, and surveillance. The target-tracking capabilities of the LANZA LTR-25 radar are highly sophisticated. It employs advanced signal processing algorithms and multi-beam technology to accurately track multiple targets simultaneously. This enables it to provide real-time data on the position, speed, and trajectory of detected objects, which is crucial for effective threat assessment and engagement.
The LANZA LTR-25 radar is integrated with a variety of weapon systems to enhance their effectiveness. It communicates with missile systems, anti-aircraft artillery, and other defensive and offensive weapons to provide targeting information and guidance.
