Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai wins Silver in Women’s 3000m Steeplechase

Peruth Chemutai has scooped silver medal in the women’s 3000m steeple-chase final on Tuesday, marking Uganda’s second medal at the ongoing 2024 Paris Olympics.
Despite her dominance for the most laps, Chemutai crossed the finishing line in the second position at f 8:53.34 behind Bahrain’s Winfred Mutile Yavi (8:52.76).
Kenya’s Faith Cherotich completed the podium slots, settling for bronze with 8:55.15 having finished in the third place finish.
Chemutai who won gold at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan was destined for making record as the first Ugandan to defend an Olympic title.
But Yavi overtook her at the final obstacle and held onto her lead to secure the gold.
Despite the dissappointing results, Chemutai set a new national record for Uganda with her time of 8:53.34.
She adds her Silver medal to Joshua Cheptegei’s gold fetched in the men’s 10,000m scooped last week.
