The director of the Park Patriot military theme park, Vyacheslav Akhmedov, and Major General Vladimir Shesterov, deputy head of the Main Directorate of Innovative Development at the Russian Ministry of Defense, have been arrested on charges of fraud.
The Russian Investigative Committee, supported by the FSB, announced that Akhmedov has been detained and placed in a pre-trial detention center. Shesterov’s pre-trial measures are still under consideration. The case, initiated under Article 159, part 4 of the Russian Criminal Code (fraud), involves alleged embezzlement of budget funds allocated for Park Patriot and its exhibition center.
The arrests follow a series of corruption cases within the defense ministry after the resignation of former Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. The investigation targets officials from the Ministry of Defense, the “Central Military-Patriotic Park of Culture and Leisure of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation ‘Patriot’,” and its exhibition center.
Park Patriot, a 5,500-hectare museum and exhibition space, houses the main temple of the Russian army. Opened in 2014 by Sergei Shoigu, the park has since been under scrutiny for mismanagement and alleged financial misconduct.
Akhmedov and Shesterov, along with their accomplices, are suspected of siphoning off funds intended for the park’s operation and development. This high-profile case underscores the ongoing corruption issues within the Russian defense sector.
