In a captivating and highly competitive final match held at the Kampala International School Uganda (KISU), MTN Uganda emerged victorious against Huawei, the Tournament organizer, with a nail-biting 2-1 win. This victory not only clinched the championship for MTN but also highlighted the significance of sports in the corporate environment and the unity of the ICT sector in Uganda.

MTN’s journey to the finals was marked by a series of impressive performances. They qualified as the top team in their group and delivered a commanding 9-2 victory against the Ministry of Health (MOH) in the semi-finals. The final match against Huawei was a hard-fought battle, with MTN demonstrating exceptional skill and tenacity to come back from behind and secure the win.

The final match, which took place over the weekend was a true testament to the quality and intensity of the tournament. Both teams, known for their prowess and competitive spirit, delivered a spectacular performance that kept the audience on the edge of their seats. MTN’s comeback from behind to secure the win demonstrated their resilience and determination.

The tournament underscored the importance of sports within the corporate environment as a means to keep employees engaged, fit, and motivated. Participation in such events fosters team spirit, enhances physical well-being, and provides a much-needed break from the regular work routine.

The tournament was significant for its inclusive participation from every ICT stakeholder in the country. This included telcos, ministries, and regulators who support the sector. The event served as a unique platform to bring together key stakeholders, reinforcing solidarity and a shared vision for Uganda’s ICT future. It was a powerful channel for ensuring that all participants were aligned in their commitment to the country’s ICT vision, promoting collaboration and mutual support.

Honorable Aminah Zawedde, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT, graced the event as the guest of honor. Her presence highlighted the importance of the tournament and the role of sports in fostering community spirit and teamwork. “I am glad to see the various ICT Stakeholders come together as one to represent the ICT sector in such activities. I thank the private sector, government of Uganda ministries and agencies that have actively participated in the Huawei ICT Football tournament,” Zawedde said.

The tournament that started last month was organized by Huawei and a culmination of efforts from various organizations including MTN Uganda, Uganda Police, Uganda Communications Commission, Ministry of ICT, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance, Airtel Uganda, Uganda Revenue Authority, and NITA-Uganda.

According to Sunrise Xie, the Managing Director of Huawei Uganda Office, the tournament was launched to encourage physical activity and combat the sedentary desk-bound lifestyle. By bringing together the public and private sectors, it aims to promote a healthier Uganda, foster a more robust ICT sector, and build a dynamic community.

Somdev Sen, Chief Marketing Officer of MTN Uganda, expressed his pride in the team’s achievement. “This victory is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team,” he said. “Participating in this tournament has not only strengthened our team spirit but also reinforced our commitment to the ICT sector’s growth and development. We are proud to have been part of an event that brings together key stakeholders to work towards Uganda’s ICT vision.” Said Sen.
