Real Madrid
Real Madrid have officially confirmed that midfield icon Luka Modric has signed a new contract with the club until 2025.
Modric, 38, continues to shine bright at the biggest stage despite his advancing age. Even though he seemed to have lost prominence in the team in the early parts of the last season, he ended up proving his worth during the second half of the campaign.
Modric’s previous contract with Real Madrid expired on June 30, but an agreement over a new deal had already been secured, with the official signing and announcement now being made.
“Real Madrid CF and Luka Modrić have agreed to extend the contract of our captain, who remains tied to the club until June 30, 2025,” the statement from the club read.
The announcement also confirms that Modric is now the club captain for Real Madrid, taking over from Nacho Fernandez who left the Merengues as a free agent this summer.
The 38-year-old has been at the Santiago Bernabeu since 2012 when he signed from Tottenham Hotspur.
To date, Modric has played 534 matches for Real Madrid and has won six UEFA Champions League titles, four La Liga titles and various other trophies – a record total of 26.
Modric also won the Ballon d’Or in the year 2018, breaking the duopoly of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi on the prestigious honour.
A trusted lieutenant of manager Carlo Ancelotti, the Croatian international will continue as a Real Madrid player for at least another season and aim to accomplish several goals.
