Otafiire unveils vision for Prison industry revitalisation

The Minister of Internal Affairs, Maj Gen (Rtd) Kahinda Otafiire has announced a collaborative effort with the Commissioner General of Prisons to revitalize Prison Industries by implementing necessary improvements.

The Minister made this announcement during the graduation ceremony of 31 Officers who successfully completed the Prisons Intermediate Command and Staff Course.

During the ceremony, Minister Otafiire also revealed the government’s intentions to improve the welfare of staff in both Uganda Prisons and the Police force.

He directed the Uganda Prisons Services to enroll over 100 officers in the upcoming Intermediate Command and Staff Course, emphasising the significance of strengthening the capabilities of Prison Officers.

This initiative aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of Uganda Prisons Service staff, ultimately improving the overall efficiency of the services provided.

The Uganda Prisons Service achieved a significant milestone in capacity building with the graduation of the second intake of the Prisons Intermediate Command and Staff Course.

Addressing the ceremony, Commissioner General of Prisons, Dr. Johnson Byabashaija, expressed gratitude to President Museveni for his reappointment for another term in office, effective for the next 24 months.

He emphasized that the Uganda Prisons Services has an approved structure comprising over 41,000 staff members, and the organization remains committed to reaching this target.

Additionally, construction of affordable housing units is underway to address accommodation challenges faced by prison staff.

Dr. Byabashaija also acknowledged the support from the Police in empowering and building the capacities of Prisons staff at the Police Senior Command and Staff College, Bwebajja.

The Uganda Prisons Service recognised exceptional officers with prestigious awards for their outstanding performance, leadership, and innovation during the course.

Mr. Robert Tagoola Naimuli, Senior Superintendent of Prisons, was honored with the Leadership Award.

He demonstrated exemplary leadership skills, empowering and motivating his peers while displaying sound decision-making and firmness throughout the course.

Mr. Amos Niwareza, Superintendent of Prisons, received the Best Overall Participant Award. His excellence spanned various aspects of the course, showcasing maturity, a positive attitude, and a willingness to share knowledge and experiences with colleagues.

Dr. Generous Betunga Behabura, Superintendent of Prisons, earned the Commandant’s Award for her outstanding academic excellence and scholarly approach.

Her well-researched paper on “Implementation of a Livestock Farm Management Information System” has the potential to inform policy formulation. Throughout the course, she displayed academic discipline and integrity.

Andrew Kenneth Byekwaso, Superintendent of Prisons, was recognized with the Innovation Award for his creative problem-solving skills.

He consistently demonstrated exceptional creativity and innovative thinking, providing original solutions to challenges. His ability to approach problems with an innovative mindset made him a standout recipient of this award.

Mr. Samuel Ochan, Principal Officer I, was presented with the Discipline Award for his humble and dedicated service.

He exemplified qualities of humility, self-control, and unwavering commitment to the course, serving as a role model for his peers. His admirable character and conduct earned him this well-deserved award.
