Russian nuclear submarine was spotted off scotland’s west coast, near the United Kingdom. This sighting led to an emergency defense meeting, highlighting the escalating tensions between Russia and the West, especially in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The submarine in question, identified as the Kazan [currently located in Cuba], is a modern Yasen-class vessel equipped to carry cruise missiles and torpedoes. Its presence was detected after an RAF Poseidon P-8, an anti-submarine aircraft, deployed sonar buoys to identify subsurface activity.
A Royal Navy spokesperson explained, “The Royal Navy routinely monitors UK territorial waters and nearby sea areas to ensure compliance with maritime law, deter malign activities, and protect our national interests.”
The proximity of the submarine has alarmed NATO leaders, who worry it might be scouting for vulnerabilities within the alliance’s defenses. The United Kingdom’s Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood was promptly notified, and both the Prime Minister and the Secretary of Defense were briefed.
This incident follows Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent vow to “punish” the West. The reason is the providing long-range missiles and a £40 billion loan to Ukraine using frozen Russian assets. Julian Smith, the U.S. ambassador to NATO, hinted at a possible policy shift. It might permit the Army’s Tactical Missile System [ATACMS] to target Russian sites.
The discovery of the Russian submarine near the UK’s coast has heightened fears of a potential nuclear confrontation between Russia and the West.
Experts point out that the US is collaborating intensively with the Royal Canadian Navy in this search operation. To bolster this effort, Canada has deployed the Lockheed P-3 Orion, working in conjunction with the American P-8 Poseidon.
Screenshots from air traffic tracking apps reveal these aircraft patrolling a specific quadrant, flying in circles as part of their search pattern. As of now, no official information has been released regarding the results of this Canadian-American naval initiative.
