Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u has announced that the government will be suspending recruitment in the public sector as a way of reducing government expenditure.

While reading the 2024/2025 Budget on Thursday, June 13, the CS indicated that the suspension would be done for one year as the government aims to balance the budget.

“The expenditure control measures include the suspension of all new recruitment for the next one year,” the CS stated.

On the other hand, he indicated that the government will suspend the purchase of office furniture across government offices for one year.

Ndung’u also announced a suspension for office refurbishments and partitioning.

“We should ensure that our scarce resources are used in the most efficient and effective way,” he stated.

“In order to move towards a balanced budget and improve efficiency in spending the following bold actions have been outlined including curtailing spending on foreign travels.”

Additionally, under the new budget, the government will also be rationalising purchases of all motor vehicles and training expenses across all government departments.

Meanwhile, in enhancing expenditure in payment of salaries, the government will be auditing the payroll.

“We will minise government expenditure through the use of technology and this will entail the use of Wi-Fi and emails for efficient communication.

“We will review insurance schemes such as Edu Afya and align them with the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF),” the CS added.
