  • Ambassador Mohamed Al-Amine Souef visited UPDF troops in Somalia to discuss the security situation and upcoming drawdown phase. He praised their efforts and emphasized the need for social cohesion and reconciliation in Somalia’s development.

The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) Chairperson’s Special Representative, Ambassador Mohamed Al-Amine Souef, paid a visit to the Ceel Jaale Forward Operating Base in Somalia today to evaluate the security status and brief the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) troops stationed there about the forthcoming drawdown phase.

Ambassador Souef praised the UPDF troops for their unwavering commitment to promoting peace, stability, and fostering strong community bonds. He emphasized the importance of social cohesion and reconciliation for Somalia’s advancement and growth.

“I extend my gratitude to the Ugandan government under the leadership of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the UPDF for their commendable efforts in Somalia’s liberation. I urge for continued efforts towards social cohesion and reconciliation for Somalia’s progress,” remarked Ambassador Souef.

He reassured the local populace of sustained security measures even post-ATMIS operations, urging Somalis to transcend past civil strife and clan divisions to collectively rebuild the nation.

“ATMIS remains integral to community support; therefore, I encourage continued backing as they persist in safeguarding you,” Ambassador Souef urged Somali locals.

Brigadier General Anthony Lukwago Mbuusi, Sector One Commander, applauded successful clan mediation initiatives, fostering a harmonious civil-military relationship, engaging key leaders, creating conducive environments for Somali Federal Government forces to assume crucial security responsibilities, and stressed the necessity for increased humanitarian aid.

Chief Yusuf Osman Ali, representing the Ceel Jaale community, extended a warm welcome to the visiting team, praising the city’s hospitality and its inclusive nature, accommodating all Somali clans and fostering excellent cooperation.
