Police officers based in Bungoma County were subjected to mob justice by angry youths in Musole village following a crackdown mission that did not go as expected.
According to a police report obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the two officers, dressed in civilian clothing and unarmed, passed by the home of a resident suspected to be dealing in illicit brew.
The report indicated that the intentions of the officers were not clear as they had not been directed to carry out the mission by their seniors.
The two officers barged through the suspect’s home in an attempt to hunt those engaging in the vice.
The suspect, however, wailed, raising an alarm from the nearby residents who thronged his homestead.
Armed with crude weapons, the angry youths seized the two officers and beat them to a pulp.
At the time, another resident contacted police officers from Mayanja and Bungoma Police Stations who rushed to the scene to aid their colleagues.
The police officers who arrived as backup managed to drive the angry mob and restore order at the suspect’s homestead, saving the two officers’ lives in the process.
The report indicated that the officers suffered severe injuries on their limbs suspected to have been inflicted by blunt objects.
They were rushed to Nabuala Hospital by a good Samaritan and were admitted. They are currently in stable condition.
One of the police officers investigating the case advised all law enforcement authorities to always be armed when conducting any mission to avoid such instances.
“Commanders, Officers when visiting such places should be of proper strength and well armed. The possibility of being attacked is ever there,” he stated.
