A 35-year-old man in Kagumo Kirinyaga County has been placed in police custody after he reportedly killed his father with a hammer.

According to reports, the man left his house on Monday, May 20, and went to his parents who did not leave far away. When he arrived, the suspect asked for food.

His father however denied the request which in retrospect angered the son who rushed to his house and came with a hammer.

He ambushed and attacked his father with the tool, beating him to death and leaving him in a pool of his own blood.

Following the incident, the son went to the Kagumo police station where he surrendered to the officers. He is being detained at the local police station before his arraigned in court in Kangema.

The deceased’s father was taken to the local morgue awaiting a post-mortem and for preservation before his burial.

As the suspect is arraigned for the murder, the residents have been left in shock questioning why the son ended his father’s life in such a gruesome manner.

Additionally, a section of Kenyans have condemned the incident adding that the son took drastic measures for a plate of food. They also sympathised the widow who has experienced two traumatic situations.

If the suspect is found guilty by the court he stares at strict penalties including life imprisonment as outlined in the Penal Code.

Under the Penal Code, anyone who kills on provocation is not guilty of murder but manslaughter. Provocation in the act is listed as insults or wrongful acts.

” When a person who unlawfully kills another under circumstances which, but for the provisions of this section, would constitute murder, does the act which causes death in the heat of passion caused by sudden provocation as hereinafter defined, and before there is time for his passion to cool, is guilty of manslaughter only,” reads part of the code.

Notably, this is not the first gruesome murder involving a child and parents to be reported. In March, a man from Meru County killed his father and stepmother and later surrendered to police.
