The territorial police in Lira-City CPS are investigating a fatal accident that occurred on May 20, 2024, at about 12:00 hours near Rima Primary School along the Lira-Soroti highway.
It involved motor vehicle Reg No UG 1234J, a Toyota Hilux, grey in color, attached to DPP Lira, and motorcycle Reg No UDG 443E, a Bajaj Boxer.
According to the North Kyoga Region police PRO, SP Jimmy Okema Patrick, it’s alleged that motor vehicle Reg No UG 1234J was traveling at a very high speed from Soroti towards Lira-City. Upon reaching Rima Primary School, the driver knocked down a motorcycle Reg no UDG 443E Bajaj, which was carrying.
The driver, still speeding, lost control and knocked down a pedestrian, seriously injuring him. The motor vehicle then overturned, as reported by SP Okema Jimmy Patrick.
However, the police, led by the OC Traffic Lira-City CPS, immediately responded to the scene, picked up the victims, and rushed them to Lira Regional Referral Hospital. The rider, identified as Otima Ferdinand, aged 25, and the passenger, Ogwang Raymond, 66, were confirmed dead.
They were residents of Aliri village, Akalo Sub-County, Kole District. Police spokesperson for the North Kyoga Region confirmed that their bodies had been delivered to the mortuary pending further investigation. Meanwhile, the victims Okullu Emmanuel, a pedestrian, and Agola Betty, a passenger in the vehicle, were rushed to a nearby clinic for treatment.
Both the motor vehicle and the motorcycle were towed to Lira CPS pending IOV inspection. The driver of the vehicle is in police custody. However, preliminary findings indicate that the cause of the accident was overspeeding, according to a police statement.
