Residents in Kirinyaga County on Sunday stormed Kianyanga Police Station after accusing a police officer of shooting dead a youth during patrol.

According to reports, the residents had accompanied the family of the deceased who demanded answers from the police officers.

Friends of the deceased told the press that they were playing pool when the police officers arrived forcing them to flee.

They then ran in different directions and hoped that each of the members was safe only to later learn that their friend had been killed and body taken to the mortuary.

“We thought hewent home, but police officers killed him and took the body to Kerugoya mortuary,” a resident told Citizen TV.

“We have seen him today at Kerugoya Mortuary after police informed us following our storming of the station. We want to know why they took the body to the mortuary without our knowledge. We want justice.”

The region’s police commander Andrew Naibei confirmed that the incident took place on Saturday night during a police patrol.

He further noted that the policewoman involved in the incident had been apprehended and was in police custody.

“Police officers were on patrol last night when the incident happened and right now we have launched an investigation to see the family get justice,” Naibei told the press.

“I have informed the chairman of the security committee in the county. Please tell them to receive our condolences; it is very unfortunate.

The deceased’s grandmother noted that the victim sat for his high school national exams in 2023 and had been living with him since his mother died in 2008.

In our flagship newsletter, the Evening Brief, we reported that cases of attacks on police stations were on the rise with our survey showing that seven cases took place since January 2024.

At the end of March, angry residents broke into Githabai Police Station and ejected the suspect before stoning him to death for reportedly stealing cows.

Early in March, a group of individuals attempted to storm Lang’ata Police Station to rescue individuals who had earlier been arrested for trespassing on President William Ruto’s farm.
