China is set to assist Kenyan in constructing a new headquarters for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In a statement by Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei, the Chinese government offered to assist Kenyan as both mark 60 years of bilateral cooperation.
The new headquarters will be constructed within Nairobi County. However, the exact location of the building is yet to be revealed.
As part of the preparations for the construction, a delegation tasked with designing the building met with the PS to deliberate on ideas.
“Grateful to the Government of the People’s Republic of China for its commitment to support the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the construction of the Ministry’s new headquarters as a visible marker of 60 years of diplomatic relations.
“Received the technical team in charge of project design in my office today,” he stated.
Kenyans.co.ke established that the offer to assist in the construction of the new headquarters was made in 2021 during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s term.
At the time, the project was estimated to cost Ksh4 billion.
“China has supported Kenya’s national development agenda through extensive infrastructure development that has raised the stature of Kenya as a regional transport and communications hub.
“The government of China has also given Kenya a grant of over Ksh4 billion towards the construction of a new Ministry headquarters,” the Ministry stated then.
Over the years, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been hosted at the Old Treasury building. The Ministry was first hosted at the Office of the President before relocating to the Treasury building in 1980.
