Mayuge, (UG):- The Town Clerk for Mayuge Town Council Mr Kiyanja Jarilu is ‘under fire’ over the alleged misappropriation of funds meant for the construction of roads in the eastern district.

Kiyanja is alleged to have swindled shs29 million meant for the grading of the Kyebando, Budandwe and Waako roads totalling 10km when he imposed as the engineer to carry out roadworks without knowledge of the town council committee.

The Office of the National Chairman team which is tasked with the mandate of supervising government programmes and implementation of funds unearthed the Town Clerk’s scandalous doings during the inspection of roads meant for rehabilitation in the area.

The team led by the Busoga Region ONC Coordinator for the Informal Sector Mr Segero Ali, Mayuge District Coordinator Rakib Kiyemba and Mayuge Town Council Mayor Hon Sonai, also discovered that with the intent to swindle the money, the Town Clerk assumed the Engineer’s role and position to carry out the rehabilitation resulting in the shoddy works.

“What he did, he hired a grader himself and just did shoddy work without the Engineer knowing. There are culverts, no road furnishing, no what. What the town clerk did is what was supposed to be done by the Engineer,” Mr Segero told this website, adding; that he (Jarilu) must have just used shs5m for the works and pocketed the rest of the funds.

Asked if they had reached out to the Town Clerk for an explanation, Segero said he (the town clerk) was out of the office and unavailable to speak to them over the matter.”

The Mayuge District Chief Administrative Officer, Mr. Eswilu Donath said he was not aware of the report by press time but promised to follow it up and bring the town clerk to the books if found guilty of misusing the taxpayer’s money.
