ACCIDENT | At least one person was killed and several others sustained injuries when a bus overturned on the Kampala-Masaka Road on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Ms Cissy Nabadda, an ill-fated pedestrian from Butende Village in Masaka District, who died on the spot after being struck by the bus.
The accident occurred at Mpugwe Village when the driver of the bus belonging to Global Coaches registration UAZ 809X heading to Mbarara from Kampala lost control while trying to avoid a stationary trailer registration CG 01493AC that was parked on the roadside.
Witnesses said the driver of the bus, identified as Hamidu Ggombe, attempted to swerve to avoid the Congolese truck, struck Nabadda before overturning into the road reserve. Ggombe fled the scene and his current whereabouts remain unknown.
“After causing an accident, he ran away on a boda-boda,” John Mukiibi, a witness, said.
Survivors of the accident recounted harrowing details, with some attributing the collision to reckless driving on the part of Ggombe.
“It all happened so fast,” one survivor said, “the bus was swerving, and before we knew it, we had hit the truck.”
“The bus was speeding and we warned the driver several times, but he didn’t listen,” said one of the survivors, who wished to remain anonymous.
“We were lucky to survive, but others weren’t so fortunate.”
The injured, whose number could not be readily established, were taken to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital.
The Southern Region Police spokesperson, Twaha Kasirye, attributed it to reckless driving.
“We are still investigating, but preliminary reports indicate that the bus driver was driving recklessly, leading to the accident,” Kasirye said.
“We are hunting for the driver, and he will face charges of reckless driving, causing death, and fleeing the scene of an accident.”
Mr Kasirye appealed to the public to help police locate the driver, adding that the police are working to ensure justice for the victims and their families.
The accident has raised concerns about road safety and the need for stricter regulations on public transport.
“This is a wake-up call for all of us to prioritise safety on our roads,” said Kasirye. “We can’t continue to lose lives due to reckless driving and negligence.”
The incident has also sparked debate about the need for stricter regulations on public transport and the importance of driver training and accountability.

“This could have been avoided, but negligence has cost someone their life,” said Bazadde Kaweesa, the Bukulula Subcounty chairperson.
