Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has warned ministers to stop their idle corridor talks of accusing the members of parliament of rejecting the government bills yet many of them don’t attend the plenary sittings.
Ms Among and her deputy Thomas Tayebwa, have relentlessly warned ministers and MPs against dodging the House proceedings. In her communication to the House on Tuesday, June 20, Speaker Among had promised that the legislators’ attendance would be monitored using biometrics as a way of improving their participation and performance.
In her remarks while opening Yesterday’s plenary sitting,Among noted that many ministers failed to come to parliament to defend their bills during the time of considering the bills. They instead went to cabinet and blamed the house for not passing their bills. They couldn’t defend their bills because they were absent.
Among reminded them that parliament is not a theater of legislation saying concerns are best addressed only in parliament but not in cabinet or elsewhere.
She also expressed dissatisfaction with some ministers who have made it in attendance of attacking parliament and accusing the houses of being bribed not to approve some RAPEX bill.
She challenged the executive to close parliament if they see it is doing nothing instead of tarnishing and destroying the integrity of members of parliament and the house at large.
