A dawn distress call by a woman in Kitengela appealing for help has painted a picture of a flooding situation getting worse in the populous Kajiado county town.

Wangari Gikonyo, a widow who lives at Blessed Court along Balozi Road in Kitengela first asked for help at 2:48 am Wednesday.

“Oooh, my God. We are dying. Anyone in Kitengela please help. Floods,” Gikoyo tweeted.

“0719443532. Balozi road Kitengela. Blessed court,” she added in another tweet disclosing her contact details and location

In a series of more tweets, she indicated that her life and that of her children were in danger.

She went on to reveal that she had recently lost her husband and was picking up the broken pieces of life only to hit again with the flooding situation.

“Niko na watoto kwa nyumba nisaidieni. Nataka tu kutoka na watoi. Izi vitu ata sitaki ,” she stated.

“Unajaribu kuanza maisha afresh kama mjane alafu mafuriko inaku-attack. My God.”

Loosely translates: “I have children in the house please help me. I want to leave with my children. I don’t need to rescue any of my property. You try to pick up your life afresh as a widow then floods strike”.At about 7 am, Gikonyo confirmed that she was still alive but said she needed emergency evacuation urgently.

“Still waiting to be rescued,” she stated even as she shared a video of her home marooned by flood waters.

The Kenya Red Cross team has confirmed that they are in contact with her and are trying their best to rescue her.

“We have been in touch with her. Our teams are on the ground doing the best they can. So far, three people have been rescued,” KRC said in a tweet.

In a statement, the Kenya Red Cross said several families had been affected along Deliverance Road, Balozi Road, Baraka Road, Blessed Court, New Valley, Changombe, and the KAG area.

“We are currently on the ground assisting families to move to safety in Kitengela, Kajiado County, following heavy rainfall. Our teams are actively involved in helping households along Deliverance Road, Balozi Road, Baraka Road, Blessed Court, New Valley, Changombe, and KAG area,” Kenya Red Cross said on Wednesday morning.

“Our teams are actively involved in helping households along Deliverance Road, Balozi Road, Baraka Road, Blessed Court, New Valley, Changombe, and KAG area.”

Three hours later, the non-governmental organisation revealed that it had rescued six individuals using inflatable boats.

Across the seat along Thika Superhighway, motorists were stranded after the heavy downpour caused flooding along the busy road at Kahawa Sukari.

Separately, one person was killed and others injured after a house under construction in Kirinyaga County collapsed.

It is believed that the building was affected by intense rain pounding the country and it is not clear whether others are still trapped in the rubble.

The order affects all individuals living on fragile ecosystems including areas likely to be or already affected by flooding, mudslides, and landslides as well as those living along riparian lands. They should depart by Thursday this week.

“It is important that ahead of time, we protect the lives of people and that is why we have concluded the mapping of all areas that are in danger so that we can assist citizens to move away in time because the forecast is such that rain will continue for the foreseeable future and there is a lot of precipitation in many places,” he stated.

“There are people looking to go back home. Do not be in a rush to return because the government will take care of your needs and we shall send experts to assess the land. If we get assurance of no further disaster occurring, we shall facilitate your return,” he assured the victims.
