The ongoing FDC Katonga consultations have sparked a wave of mixed reactions across the country, with divergent opinions emerging regarding the intentions behind the initiative, particularly in relation to former presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye’s involvement.

At a recent meeting held in Kira, the FDC Katonga faction resolved to embark on nationwide consultations to gauge the sentiments of their supporters and chart a way forward following their fallout with Najjanakumbi.

The key agenda includes deliberations on whether to form a new political entity, reconcile with Katonga, or align with another group under the leadership of Rtd Col Dr. Kizza Besigye, leaving many pondering the motives of both Katonga and Besigye.

Veteran politician Wasswa Lule raised questions about Dr. Besigye’s role in spearheading the consultations, particularly in light of his decision to step away from elective politics.

Lule queried why Besigye, who has expressed skepticism towards the electoral process, is leading the initiative.

On the other hand, political analyst Peter Kibazo sees Besigye’s involvement as a strategic move to provide a platform for his loyalists to re-enter parliament while advancing his agenda of regime change.

Kibazo emphasized Besigye’s commitment to the opposition cause, suggesting that forming a new political party could serve as a means to achieve their objectives.

However, Kibazo also cautioned that establishing another political party might face significant challenges, citing the emergence of NUP as a cautionary tale.

He warned that even if a new party is formed, it may encounter similar hurdles as existing parties.

In contrast, Wasswa Lule expressed concerns that Besigye and other opposition figures could be engaging in diversionary tactics, potentially aligning their actions with those of the government.

Lule suggested that the proliferation of chaos and confusion could inadvertently benefit the ruling party’s agenda.
