President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni yesterday met and held discussions with the Bishops from Rwenzori Dioceses who paid a courtesy call on him at State House, Entebbe.
During the meeting, the clerics, led by the Rt. Rev. Bishop Reuben Kisembo briefed President Museveni on the progress of the preparations of the Church of Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations slated for 3rd June 2024.
Bishop Kisembo on behalf of the Bishops from the greater Rwenzori sub-region appreciated the government of Uganda’s support and partnership to the Church of Uganda.
President Museveni pledged to support the Church to ensure that the celebrations are a success.
He however implored the religious leaders to mobilise believers to embrace wealth creation programs to fight poverty.
The President also pointed out some of the setbacks that maintain some sections of the population in Uganda in perpetual poverty and urged the Bishops to resolve the issue.
“Part of the problem that you must work on is that of subsistence farming and land fragmentation based on inheritance. This is very dangerous. The land is disabled because of bad human settlement. Then three, lack of proper enterprise selection. In Kasese for example coffee and apples could do very well because of the favourable terrain and climate,” he noted.
The Rwenzori cluster will this year host Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations at the Anglican Martyrs Shrine in Namugongo under the theme: “United for Sustainable Services and Growth”.
