Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) enforcement officers in Busitema intercepted a Fuso truck bearing registration number UBH877K. The truck was discovered to be transporting smuggled motorcycle spare parts and accessories.
Acting on credible intelligence received on Saturday, March 16th, the enforcement team in Busia initiated surveillance on a Fuso truck suspected of carrying goods allegedly purchased from Kampala. Their covert operation led them to spot the truck traveling along the Amungura-Tororo Road en route to Mbale and Lira.
Subsequently, the truck was intercepted near Malaba Bridge and transported to the Busitema tactical base for further investigation. Upon closer inspection, authorities uncovered a significant haul of contraband, including 180 motorcycle tires, 20 boxes of vehicle headlamp covers with fittings, 20 boxes of sprocket chain motorcycle spare parts, 6 boxes of motorcycle headlamp accessories, and 4 pieces of motorcycle wheels.
The driver of the truck presented Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing System (EFRIS) receipts in an attempt to legitimize the goods. However, upon verification, it was revealed that these receipts were counterfeit.
A customs officer stationed at the Busitema checkpoint, elucidated, “Upon scrutinizing the serial numbers from our system, one of them misrepresented the goods, and the other two were non-existent. At this juncture, we suspected forgery of documents and outright smuggling of goods.” Subsequently, the driver was handed over to Revenue Intelligence for further investigation and case management.
