At the first Uganda Athletics Federation 2024 National Trial, held at Uganda Christian University (UCU) Mukono today, the country’s star female sprinter, Shida Leni, moved down from her preferred 400 metres to 200 metres. Despite being drawn in the unfavourable outside lane (Lane 8) she easily won the race in 24.4 sec.

COACHING OF SHIDA

Shida, who is the National Record Holder for both 400 and 200 metres, has been trained since August 2013 by Coaches Kevin and Sue O’Connor.

IMPORTANT KENYAN MEETING

Kevin commented, “Shida will be competing over 400 metres in a big Athletics Kenya meeting in Nairobi, 16 – 17 February. We have been told that the hugely talented Mary Moraa will be taking part. Mary is Kenya’s National Record Holder for 400 metres, and won 800 metres Gold Medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and 2023 World Championships. She will provide just the type of tough opposition over 400 metres that Shida needs, and for which the Mukono meeting provided excellent preparation.”

WEIGHT-TRAINING AT SILVER SPRINGS HOTEL

“Shida is an incredibly dedicated athlete,” Kevin continued. “Tomorrow (Sunday) she will be hill training, and on Monday will be weight-training with me in Kampala’s Silver Springs Hotel Espace Gym. We are hugely grateful to the Hotel for it giving Shida complimentary membership of its gym and swimming pool, which have been major factors in Shida’s success on the athletics track.”
