On Saturday, the anti-terrorism squad reported the detonation of an improvised explosive device (IED) in the bustling Kataba slum, Kabalagala-Munyonyo area, on Friday evening.
Kabalagala police, acting on a tip, successfully recovered and safely detonated the suspected IED in a densely populated area, as detailed by Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire.
ASP Owoyesigyire reassured the public, confirming that no injuries or casualties occurred. The police are actively pursuing leads to identify the individuals responsible for placing the explosive device in the busy location.
Emphasizing the normalcy of the situation, Owoyesigyire urged the public to remain vigilant, particularly during the festive season when security concerns tend to escalate.
The plea for vigilance echoes the ongoing threat of terrorism, underlined by President Museveni’s revelation in October that Ugandan police thwarted an Islamic State-linked militant plot by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) to bomb churches in Butambala. The explosives, cleverly disguised as gifts appended to public address systems, were intercepted, preventing potential devastation.
