Ajax’s home Eredivisie game against defending champions Feyenoord was abandoned after ugly scenes broke out at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Sunday evening.

Disgruntled fans were seen throwing flares onto the pitch during the game, while riot police were filmed charging at supporters on horseback outside of the stadium after the fixture was terminated.

The police were also seen using tear gas to disperse people outside of the Johan Cruyff Arena after the Ajax fans resorted to vandalising their own stadium in frustration.

Parts of the Johan Cruyff Arena were said to be ‘destroyed’ during the chaos on Sunday night – with video footage showing fans smashing windows and kicking through doors.

The fiercely contested derby was halted 11 minutes into the second half at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Sunday with the visitors leading the game 3-0.

Ajax have made a miserable start to the new Eredivisie season, winning just once as they sit 13th in the table

Ajax, who have had a poor start to the season with just one win, sit 13th in the league table after missing out on the league title to Feyenoord last term.

They conceded all three goals in the first half, leading to discontent from the fans.

When flares were thrown onto the pitch for a second time after the break, with many landing near the goal, the referee stopped the contest and directed the players down the tunnel.

Fans paid no heed as the club displayed the message ‘Lighting of fireworks is prohibited’ on the big screen at the at the Johan Cruyff Arena as they continued to show their frustrations.

It’s a poor run of form that Ajax fans aren’t used to, with the club reaching the Champions League semi-final just four years ago and winning three of the last four Eredivisie titles.

But this season they have picked up three points just once in their first four league matches, beating Heracles on the opening day before things went rapidly downhill.

A 2-2 draw with Excelsior was next before another stalemate against Fortuna Sittard, which is when frustrations over form began to rise.

A 3-1 defeat to FC Twente last weekend meant a disappointing start to the season was developing into a poor one, and fans at the ground made their feelings known on Sunday evening.

‘De Klassieker has been permanently suspended after repeated fireworks on the field,’ the Eredivisie said in a statement.

‘More information on playing out this game will follow later.’

Some supporters tried to break back into the stadium after the game had been suspended, causing damage to the ground as they began to vandalise their own stadium.

Police used tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowds that had gathered on the perimeter of the ground.

Ajax finished third last season and failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 13 seasons. They had finished champions seven times and runners-up another five over the previous 12 seasons overall.

Manager Maurice Steijn said following the suspension that ‘it is a jet black day, [and] this makes it even worse’.
