Uganda Women’s National Netball team, the She Cranes, pummelled Trinidad and Tobago 74-34 in their last group D game on Sunday.
The emphatic win sees She Cranes finish top of Group D behind New Zealand, the only side to beat Uganda at the ongoing tournament in South Africa.
Mary Nuba who came in for Christine Namulumba at the start of the second quarter, dominated the shooting arc with 35 goals including a couple of lovely layups.
Margaret Baagala continued to excel in the middle with 39 assists while Irene Eyaru and Shadiah Nassanga had 18 and 17 goals respectively.
Uganda looked shaky and trailed 4-1 in the opening exchanges but later found the rhythm and took control.
They led 14-11 after the first quarter and opened a 33-18 advantage at the long break.
The She Cranes were from there on efficient, winning the second half 41-16 to stamp their authority against Trinidad.
Afeisha Noel scored 29 goals for the Calypso Girls but her effort proved not enough on the evening.
Uganda will be regrouped in the second preliminary round where they will face off with Hosts South Africa, Jamaica and Wales.
Format
The top three teams from Groups A and B will be joined in a new Pool F.
And the same will be done for the top three in C and D to form a new Group G.
These teams will carry forward the results against the teams they faced in the initial groups.
And will contest three further matches against teams they have yet to play in the Group.
